Crime Travel by Chris Bunton
Savannah, Georgia is not a hot bed of crime. It’s about the same as any city of its size. I felt safe there, no matter where I went.
We traveled there as part of a trip that included several stops. While there I did some research on a couple of true crime locations.
The Savannah Axe Murders, and the Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil crime.
Savannah is a beautiful city, with lots of character. It is considered by some to be the most haunted city in America. Although, I think Alton, Illinois is definitely in the running.
My wife and I stayed at the Hotel Indigo down on the riverfront. It is the second time we’ve stayed at their establishments. The first was in Alexandria, Virginia.

The hotels have been safe, clean and quiet each time we’ve stayed there.
This time my wife and I had our schnauzer Gus with us. The Hotel Indigo was pet friendly. Savannah itself advertises its pet friendly nature, and we found it to be so.

We walked on the river front and ate at the Olympia Cafe, which was very pet friendly and brought out a bowl of water for Gus.

The next day, we went to the area of Forsyth Park, and the Mercer-Williams house. These were the locations of the Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil murder, book, and movie.

We had coffee and a muffin at Bitty and Beau’s Coffee.
Then, we went to Bonaventure Cemetary. It is a beautiful place of peace along the river.

The Bird Girl statue made famous by the Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, movie and book is no longer there. It’s been moved to one of the Telfair Museums down town.

Our final site was the location of the Savannah Axe Murders, down town at 401 west Perry St. In 1909 3 women were killed in what was called the Gribble House.
The murders drew national attention at the time. The location is thought to be haunted.

Our stay in Savannah was wonderful, but way too quick. We love the area and plan to return some day. Now we head down to Brunswick, Georgia.

Any time we take Gus in the car for long periods of time, we put him in his own little car seat. It safely attaches to the head rest and then to his vest. He can hop out if he wants but it keeps him safe and contained. The vest is better because you wouldn’t want to attach the dog by a neck collar in a wreck. Twenty Dollar Post-Mortem
Crime Fiction by R.J. Butler My first day in Homicide, and it rained. Always a bad start. Whitehaven looks like a city trying to kill itself but missing every time. The buildings lean away from each other, as if ashamed to be seen standing beside each other, as the brick rots and the windows sweat,…
The Nest Egg
Crime Fiction by Roy Dorman Bobby Mason walked out of the front gates of the Nevada Restitution Center with a spring in his step. He’d done seven years and eight months of a ten-year sentence, leaving early due to his good behavior. Bobby had gone in at age twenty-three and was now a free man…
Macy Walks The Labyrinth
Crime Fiction by Lina Chern Macy dreams of the little girl in red again. Old-fashioned pinafore dress, pigtails. Or pigtail. One eye, half a mouth frozen in a toothy grin. Macy only sees half of her, like she is always just around the corner. Today, for the first time, the girl is all there. She’s…
Great article!
Thank you!
Savannah is a sister city to my hometown, Charleston, South Carolina. Loved this article, and loved your schnauzer. I once owned two minis and I miss them every day. You can get more dogs, but you can’t replace them.
Thank you! Yes, they cant be replaced for sure.
