Review by The Yard
In the movie, a writer named John Kelso played by John Cusak, travels to Savannah Georgia to cover a Christmas party put on by Jim Williams played by Kevin Spacey.
He quickly finds himself pulled into the local color of Savannah.
After the party Jim Williams (Spacey) shoots a Savannah native named Billy Hanson played by a young Jude Law. The two were lovers, having a spat. It seems that anger and resentment had built up over time, and it was unleashed in murder.
Jim Williams is charged and a trial ensues.
John Kelso decides to turn his magazine article into a book. He stays around to write it.
The ending shows the lovers, killer and victim are still connected in love. Despite the anger and tragedy.
The story is a true story based on the book, “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” by John Berendt. The screenplay was written by John Lee Hancock
The movie is fantastic and a classic.
It was produced and directed by Clint Eastwood. His daughter Allison Eastwood. also plays a part, Mandy Nicholls.
In the book, many of the names are different from the movie. Also, the book gives far more detail and tells of multiple trials, while the movie only depicts one.
