Prison Fellowship Ministries

True Crime by Chris Bunton

I want to talk to you about Prison Fellowship Ministries.

It’s an organization geared toward helping prison inmates, and justice reform.

It was created by Chuck Colson.

Charles Colson was in President Nixon’s administration during the Watergate scandal.

He went to prison for obstruction of justice, for trying to cover it up.

During his time in prison he got saved, giving his life to Jesus Christ.

Then, because of the things he saw and dealt with during his trial and prison term he felt God wanted him to help other people going through such things.

So, he created Prison Fellowship for that purpose.

Some of us like to say, ” if you can’t do the time, don’t do the crime.”

But, the fact is that how people are treated can cause them to get better or worse. We know people can change. Chuck Colson is an example and there are many others.

But what if people who grew up in terrible situations, and broke the law. What if they were treated with respect? What if they got kindness and real help? Physical, mental and spiritual help? Could they have a better chance at change?

Then, if enough convicts changed, maybe their kids and neighbors could be changed, and we start to see less crime. Or at least, less terrible crimes.

How we treat our prisoners is a direct reflection on our society. And I’m not talking about giving them cable TV and classes. Those are means of control and a show of caring. Privileges do not create change. It takes more.

Prison Fellowship works to get inmates to turn to God, and change their lives. They also try to do things to show the inmates that love does exist.

One of the projects they do is Angel Tree. It is where people can help inmates kids to have presents for Christmas.

When a person goes to prison, it impacts the family as well. It creates generational poverty, and curses that can destroy the lives of the people at home, who did not commit a crime.

Prison Fellowship is a solid organization that is doing things to help change people’s lives.
