Travel: Kansas City, Missouri

Travel Writing by Chris Bunton

We traveled to Kansas City, Missouri, where I researched the Serial Killer Robert Berdella, The Kansas City Massacre. The Liberty Bank Robbery, and wrote the short story “Stranger In The Camp

As a crime magazine, our focus in this is crime and safety when traveling, while still having a good time.

I would just like to say that Kansas City is a phenomenal place. We ate Bar-b-que, and saw tons of history and sites. We really enjoyed Liberty and Independence MO. With Jesse James, Harry Truman and other history.

As I’ve said before, my wife is an expert at finding great places to stay. And safety is a must for me. I would never forgive myself if something happened to her.

And once again, she found a great house online in a wonderful neighborhood. BUT… we are 90% sure this place was haunted.

As far as crime is concerned, we felt safe everywhere in Kansas City except for the park where the Scout statue was.

But, let’s deal with the house first.

When we pulled into the neighborhood, the house was great. But, the neighbors had signs everywhere saying “Ban short term rentals”.

So, when we went inside there was an odd feeling of unease. Not sure how to explain it. The house was great, but normally we feel excited. It just wasn’t. I chalked it up to the neighbors, hating on us before we even did anything wrong.

I will say that every short term rental we’ve used have been one of the most well maintained properties in the neighborhood. That fact alone raises the value. They also increase tourism and business for destinations and people.

Anyway, we went to bed that night, and I was awakened with strange oppressive dreams, and hearing things. I heard an old junk yard dog walking through the house dragging a chain. I also heard something coming down from the attic through one of those access panels in the closet. I heard the hangers rattling as it climbed down.  But, when I looked, there was no panel in the closet.

So, I prayed and prayed and cast out the demon. Then I had peace and went to sleep.

Anyway, the next night she was oppressed, but I was left alone.

We prayed again, and then the next night nothing happened. Everything was peaceful.

The next night we both had problems but it was less. Then, the night before we left nothing happened. It was like the entity or whatever knew we were leaving.

Despite the creepy house, Kansas City was a wonderful city. We never felt unsafe, except at the park where the Scout statue sat.  We pulled up and there were several young guys there smoking pot, which is no big deal, but it seemed like we interrupted something. And they were acting a little odd. So we took some pics and left. That’s the only crime related or concerning thing we witnessed the whole time in Kansas City.

During our trip, we ate at several fantastic places. One of best places was Q39. They had awesome Bar-b-que. We also had huge wings at the Char-Bar.

We ate delicious seafood at Jax Fish House and Oyster Bar.

Then, one night we just wanted to go back to the spooky house and eat pizza, which we got from Artego Pizza. When we travel (or anytime really) we try to eat local and support local.

When we travel we check out the art museums the city has to offer. So, we went to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.

Where we had a delicious lunch, while checking out the beautiful art work.

We went downtown and explored the Arabia Steam Boat Museum and the City Market.

The Arabia Steamboat Museum is a museum for the Steamboat Arabia which sunk in the Missouri river and was buried in mud in the 1800’s. It was found in a farmers field and they dug it up. Everything on the boat was perfectly preserved. It’s like a blast from the past to see the huge amounts of things they found.

We ate lunch at Brown and Loe down the street from the Museum.

Deviled Eggs and Mushroom Biscuits.

Yes, I seem to take a lot of pictures of my food.

We drove out to Independence, Missouri where we visited the Harry S. Truman Home and Truman Presidential Library

After the Truman Presidential Library we went out to eat in Independence, at the Cafe Verona.

The sun was setting over the Independence Temple as we were going in to the restaurant.

On another day we visited Liberty, Missouri where we went to the Historic Liberty Jail where Joseph Smith was held.

I did research for my article on the Liberty Bank Robbery at The Liberty Bank where the first bank robbery during peacetime was committed, by Frank James.

Then, we traveled out to see the Jesse James Museum and Birth Place.

No Drinking allowed.

On another day, we visited the Kansas City Union Station where I researched the Kansas City Massacre.

Kansas city was great. I got tons of inspiration from it. It is a safe, clean city with tons of things to do.

Visit Kansas City.

This is a security wedge for safety when traveling. I carry one whenever I travel. You just place it in front of a door, and it will scream if someone opens the door. Very simple design for hotels or any place you sleep with a door.

True Crime By Dennette Bender (Russell) It was not a typical Friday in 1994. It was the first day of the annual Decatur Celebration, a day many in central Illinois looked forward to. 1. It;s a great city, Glen. I only posted about half the things to do. They have a cool history for wagon trains heading west. I did not realize how many old trails started in Kansas City.
