Book Review: Trick Baby

Book Review by Chris Bunton

After reading the non-fiction book, “Pimp” by Iceberg Slim. I decided to check out his fiction books starting with Trick Baby.

The book was very good, and well written. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it

It begins with the author telling the story that was told to him, by one of his cellies in the joint.

He tells of a guy named “White Folks”.

That’s his nickname, given to him by his conman mentor, because the character had such light skin he could pass as a white dude when conning white folks.

Trick Baby tells the life story of how “White Folks” learns to be a conman.

Through his tragic life he learns to survive and thrive in a world that seeks to drive him down.

Even as a child he is born into a life where his mother must make ends meet, and the neighborhood kids call him a “Trick Baby.”

A baby born of prostitution, when a white man visits a black prostitute.

The book is great in its telling of the life on the streets in middle 20th century America. It’s true in its telling because it comes from a man who lived it.

Iceberg Slim, or Robert Beck is one of those cult classic writers that society tries to ignore. His Amazon page had this to say about him…

“Iceberg Slim, also known as Robert Beck, was born in Chicago in 1918 and was initiated into the life of the pimp at age 18. He briefly attended the Tuskegee Institute but dropped out to return to the streets of the South Side, where he remained, pimping until he was 42. After several stints in jail he decided to give up the life and turned to writing, crafting most famously his autobiographical classic, Pimp: The Story of My Life. He died in 1992.”

I am already purchasing my next Iceberg Slim book.
