Movie Review: Nightcrawler

Movie Review By Chris Bunton

This 2014 film is an interesting concept, where a thief discovers that he can sell video footage of crimes and tragedies to news stations in his local area.

He learns that he can make money and enjoys the work, so he tries to create a legitimate business out of it. But, the criminal side of his nature starts to come out as he begins staging tragedies, and influencing crimes, in order to get better video footage that he can sell.

The movie stars Jake Gyllenhaal as “Lou Bloom”. With co-stars Riz Ahmed, Rene Russo, and Bill Paxton. The film was written and directed by Dan Gilroy.

Gilroy got the idea for the movie from looking at a photo-album from a man called Weegee, who used to photograph crime scenes during the 1930’s and 40’s. It was uncanny how the photojournalist would always be on time at the scene. He would take the pics, then sell them to the newspapers and tabloids.

I enjoyed the flick a lot. It shows that even when a person realizes their purpose or path, there are temptations to overcome. It is a dark film, full of action. It has a very interesting concept.
