Book Review by Chris Bunton
Rum Punch is the second Elmore Leonard book I’ve read. It is the sequel to the book The Switch, and has the same main characters. Ordell Robbie, Louis Gara, and Melanie.
The book takes place many years after the first book, and the characters have changed. They are all more jaded.
In the first book Ordell and Louis had more care for people. They were criminals but still had heart.
In this book, Louis doesn’t seem to care about anything, and Ordell has become a straight up criminal. Melanie, who has always been shady has gotten even worse.
The story begins with Jackie Burke, an airline stewardess getting arrested.
She happens to be working for Ordell, who has become an arms dealer.
Since Jackie is an airline stewardess, she can get past customs. Remember, this book was written in 1992. It was long before the heavy security measures employed today because of 9/11.
Ordell has enlisted her to carry his cash into the United States from the Bahamas. But, the guy in the Bahamas who loads the cash decided to include some cocaine as a treat for Melanie, Ordell’s girlfriend.
The police are tipped off and they search Jackie’s bag, finding the coke. This forces her to start dealing with the feds.
And the story goes from there.
Director Quentin Tarantino turned the book into the movie, Jackie Brown.
