Travel by Chris Bunton
I love to travel, and with my true crime travel writing I do a lot of it.
One of the things I stress above all else is safety. We are very careful about where we stay and what we do.
My wife finds our accommodations. She has become an online sleuth at finding out if where we are staying is a good place. Because she knows I will pack up and move if there’s even a hint of nonsense.
So, I’ve decided to give a personal crime report on some of the places we’ve traveled to.
Memphis, Tennessee has a reputation for having lots of crime. We can look at the stats and see what’s up.
But there’s something about stats that needs to be remembered. They take into account the whole place. Good neighborhoods and bad. They include travelers as well as citizens.
I will say that I never really felt unsafe in Memphis. There is a heavy police presence everywhere tourist sites exist.
Even when I was out traveling through neighborhoods researching Serial Killer George Howard Putt. There were police cameras on poles and wagons in strategic locations.
Now I’m not going to say that a crime can’t be committed around cameras. But, I will say that criminals don’t tend to hangout around cameras. That’s just not their ideal lurking place. The City of Memphis is doing a great job protecting travelers in their city.
We checked out everything Memphis had to offer.
We walked around Beale Street.

We went to all the sites, and there was never a moment that I totally felt creeped out. Even the house we rented felt very safe and in a good neighborhood.
We enjoyed our time, and I got some great research and pics.
We ate the best Bar B Que.
You can smell the food cooking at The Rendezvous, as soon as you head down the alley where the restaurant is located. It was delicious.

We also ate wings at B.B. Kings.

We checked out the Peabody Hotel. Where the ducks are on parade.

We went to the Bass Pro Shop Pyramid. Which has an interesting personal history.
During the Civil War troops were stationed in Memphis. My Great, Great, Great Grandfather was stationed there. He caught Measles, so his wife; my Great, Great, Great, Grandma and her infant child went down there from Southern Illinois to take care of him. They all got Measles too and they all died.
He was buried in a military cemetery. But, she and the baby were buried in a potters field which was located some where around where the Pyramid stands today.

We visited Graceland, to see the King.

We went to a night time open house tour at the Woodruff-Fontaine House

The Orpheum

We visited the Lorraine Motel. Where Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated

Memphis is a great city to visit. It is full of history and things to do. Great food. Great music along with terrible historical tragedies.
