The Sopranos is a TV Series that aired on HBO. I watched the series twice. Once alone, and once with my wife, who had never seen it. We loved the show, and even today we quote it, or make reference to it.
The series is about Tony Soprano, played by the late James Gandolfini, who is the leader of a mafia crew in New Jersey. He starts having panic attacks, and passing out, so his doctor recommends that he go to a psychiatrist to get help. And that’s where it begins. How does a mobster reveal the problems of his life of crime to his shrink?
The show, which had 6 seasons, was created by David Chase. It first appeared on HBO in 1990, and ended in 2007, after 86 episodes. The show has won numerous awards and accolades.
In the series Tony and his crew operate their mafia affairs, while struggling with the normal challenges of life. The show does a great job humanizing the characters, and dealing with lots of common problems while staying true to the character of the show, and the characters themselves.
David Chase, the creator of the Sopranos is quoted as saying that he wanted “To tell the story about the reality of being a mobster…They aren’t shooting each other every day. They sit around eating baked ziti and betting and figuring out who owes who money. Occasionally, violence breaks out…”
And that’s a good picture of the Sopranos. The show is full of characters you can empathize with, and understand. They are people you love, and miss when the show is over.
