Movie Review: Spiderhead

By Chris Bunton

I recently watched Spiderhead on Netflix, and would like to say that it is a very entertaining flick. Since, it’s new I want to avoid any spoilers. But, I wanted to fire off a review anyway.

Spiderhead is a film produced by Netflix and can be found on that streaming service. It stars Chris Hemsworth, Miles Teller, and Jurnee Smollett.

The story takes place in the future, although it is a very near future. The Spiderhead prison has been set up as an experiment in new methods of incarceration. At the same time, the inmates are allowed to be of value to humanity by submitting to experimental drugs.  Their jailer Steve Abernesti, played by Hemsworth, performs the experiments, all with the “Acknowledgement” of the inmates.

The main character, inmate “Jeff”, played by Miles Teller starts to suspect that something is not quite right with the utopian prison system he is locked in.

As the experiments progress, they take a darker turn and the truth becomes revealed.

The film is based on the Short Story, “Escape from Spiderhead” by George Saunders. The screenplay was written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. The film was directed by Joseph Kosinski.

Chris Hemsworth of “Thor” fame, and Miles Teller from the recent limited series “The Offer” do an amazing job, in this dystopian film.
